Content Management System

Wordpress represents an easy to use Open Source Blog Software optimized for blogs and small websites.

The very beginning

b2 / cafelog was the precursor to WordPress. WordPress first appeared in 2003 as a joint effort between Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little to create a fork of b2. The name WordPress was suggested by Christine Selleck, a friend of Mullenweg

In 2004 the licensing terms for the competing Movable Type package were changed by Six Apart, and many of its users migrated to WordPress - causing a marked and continuing growth in WordPress's popularity. By October, 2009, the 2009 Open Source CMS Market Share Report reached the conclusion that WordPress enjoys the greatest brand strength of any open source content management systems. That conclusion was based on an extensive analysis of rate of adoption patterns and brand strength and was backed by a survey of users.

Architectural overview

WordPress is an open source blog publishing application powered by PHP 4.3+ and MySQL 4.1.2+, which can also be used for content management. It has many features including a plugin architecture and a templating system.

The system runs an Apache or Nginx. Besides of that, WordPress can also be installed via the Microsoft Web Platform Installer which installs WordPress on Windows and IIS. The WordPress templating system includes widgets that can be rearranged without editing PHP or HTML code, as well as themes that can be installed and switched between. The PHP and HTML code in themes can also be edited for more advanced customizations. WordPress also features

  • integrated link management
  • search engine friendly, clean permalink structure
  • the ability to assign nested, multiple categories to articles
  • the support for tagging of posts and articles
  • and automatic filters.

WordPress also supports the Trackback and Pingback standards for displaying links to other sites that have themselves linked to a post or article. Finally, WordPress has a rich plugin architecture which allows users and developers to extend its functionality beyond the features that come as part of the base install.

Licence costs

This software is open source and free to download. With commercial systems, the cost of license fees can add up quickly as you add software extensions, users, servers or databases.

With the open source licensing model, you can minimize the amount of your initial investment, which increases your ROI over the same time period. Besides the financial gains of using open source, you will also have the freedom of choice. With similar commercial systems, you cannot alter the software, build additional functionality or even control your data because you are locked in a contract that prevents you from doing so. It is better to invest the savings in comprehend consultancy and training services: WEB9 ensures you to receive a customized system that meets your business requirements and will save the future budgets.
